Hughesnet home internet review

HughesNet offers reliable satellite internet service, ideal for rural areas where other high-speed options may not be available. With speeds up to 25 Mbps, it’s a solid choice for basic activities like browsing, email, and video streaming. Their service is backed by a no hard data cap policy, though they do have a data allowance system, where speeds may slow down once you exceed your plan’s high-speed data limit.

Customer service for HughesNet is generally rated average, with many users mentioning helpful support, though wait times can sometimes be lengthy. The installation process is simple, and equipment is provided at an additional monthly cost, usually around $10-$15 per month.

While HughesNet can be a great option for those in underserved areas, its relatively high pricing and limited speed compared to cable or fiber internet make it less ideal for heavy internet users or large households.

Things to consider

Two-year contract

Hughesnet requires a two-year service agreement, and changing or canceling service before it’s up can result in early service termination fees

High latency

Satellite internet has high latency, which makes online gaming impractical. Hughesnet Fusion plans do have less latency, however

Choosing a Hughesnet data plan

HughesNet offers several satellite internet plans designed to suit different household needs. Their plans start at $64.99 per month for the 10 GB plan, which provides speeds up to 25 Mbps—ideal for basic browsing and light streaming. As usage increases, they offer larger data plans like the 20 GB plan for $79.99/month and the 30 GB plan at $99.99/month, both of which are suitable for moderate use, including streaming HD content and online gaming.

Make the most of your Bonus Zone data

Hughesnet plans come with “Bonus Zone” data, which is an additional 50GB of data included at no extra cost each month available between the hours of 2-8 a.m. Obviously, this isn’t the most convenient time to be shopping online or streaming a TV show, but strategically setting a movie or large file to download during this time is a smart way to take advantage of the extra free data.

What if I go over my data limit?

If you go over your data limit with HughesNet, your internet speed will be reduced for the remainder of the billing cycle. This means you may experience slower speeds for activities like browsing, streaming, and downloading. However, HughesNet offers a Bonus Zone from 2 AM to 8 AM, during which your data usage does not count against your monthly limit, and you can use the internet at full speed during those hours.

If you consistently exceed your data allowance, you can also purchase additional data or upgrade to a plan with a higher data allowance to avoid speed throttling.

Hughesnet Wi-Fi equipment and fees

Aside from equipment fees, taxes and various government fees for service, there aren’t many extra fees you’ll have to worry about with Hughesnet.

  • Commercial installation is $199.99
  • Activation fee: $99 (unless you buy your equipment)
  • Data tokens: Starting at $9
  • Early service termination fee: $400 if you cancel within the first 90 days, fee decreases by $15 for each month of active service thereafter

Hughesnet customer reviews

Hughesnet receives mixed reviews from customers, with many praising its reliable speeds and affordable pricing. However, customer service is often cited as a downside. Many customers report long wait times and difficulties resolving issues through support. Some users have also experienced occasional connection issues or slow speeds during peak hours, though this is not universally reported.
